Spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that runs down the middle of the back. It carries signals back and forth between the body and the brain. A spinal cord injury disrupts the signals. A spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to part of the spinal cord or nerves at the end of the spinal canal and it often causes permanent changes in strength, sensation and other body functions below the site of the injury. A spinal cord injury is a medical emergency. Immediate treatment can reduce long-term effects. Treatments include medicines, braces or traction to stabilize the spine, and surgery. Later treatment usually includes medicines and rehabilitation therapy. Spinal cord injury needs to be treated by the specialists at a hospital setting with specialised infrastructure. Spinal cord injuries can be complete or incomplete. With a complete spinal cord injury, the cord can't send signals below the level of the injury. As a result, you are paralyzed below the injury. With an incomplete injury, you have some movement and sensation below the injury.
What causes spinal cord injury (SCI)?
According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC), the most common causes of spinal cord injury are motor vehicle accidents, fall, act of violence, sports and recreation accident, or other trauma.
Is there a cure for SCI?
Currently there is no cure for SCI. There are many researchers attacking this problem, and there have been many advances in the lab.
Can people with SCI have sex, children?
SCI frequently affects sexual functioning. However, there are many therapies that allow people with SCI to have an active and satisfying sex life.
